This post brings back memories! My father was the pastor and my mother the organist, so my brothers and I were often recipients of "the look" from the choir loft, otherwise known as the hairy eyeball. And now, as God would have it, I am married to a pastor and I am pianist for our congregation. My sons are old enough to sit by themselves now, but definitely not too old for my own version of the hairy eyeball!

Rick,
I appreciate the good words here. I'm trying to provide words of encouragement to the daily worshipper and provide resources and examples to worship leaders. This all stems from how I've tried to prepare my congregations over the years.

Thanks again!

Ahh, that's great!! I sometimes wonder what some of our churches would do if people walked in one morning to find old couches and chairs and things stripped bare.... but that's the subversive side of me I think :)

Warren's admonitions obviously have experience and a measure of truth in them but I had to laugh as I thought about our little inner-city church that meets in a warehouse with couches and chairs from the Goodwill for seating. While I'm very distracted by the lack of spatial beauty (never mind the temperature control!), the others who attend off the streets, from "half-way houses" and the "'hood" don't seem to care. They do respond to the embracing love, acceptance and honesty that they encounter there. I've had to learn that worship is a matter of the heart. . . and my will. . . not my surroundings. It has been a hard, but valuable lesson.
